Q4 Review Season Is Here. What's Your Mood?

October is here, and two words start showing up on the calendar: annual review. Some people are already counting how far they are from their targets, some can't sleep, and some say "whatever happens, happens." Same review form, twelve different moods. Which one are you?

Pick your animal

Tap your animal to see which type you are, and read the insight.

Animal years change at Lichun (the start of spring, around Feb 4), the same as the main site's Career Blueprint. Born in January or early February? Add your month and day.

  1. Rat The Number Cruncher

70 days left, 3% short. Totally doable.

Stress level ★★★★☆ Right now: Already in a spreadsheet, checking off this year's goals one by one.

Workplace InsightKnowing your numbers is great, just don't stare only at the gap. Pull together what you've already achieved, too, so you walk into your review with confidence.

  2. Ox The Quiet Workhorse

Just do the job. I'll worry about the review later.

Stress level ★★☆☆☆ Right now: Working late as usual and getting things done, with zero thought about review prep.

Workplace InsightYou've done more than you think. Start a "This Year's Wins" list now and add a few lines each week, so you're not writing your review from memory.

  3. Tiger The Year-End Sprinter

Last quarter. I'm taking it all!

Stress level ★★★☆☆ Right now: Speeding up deadlines and grabbing new projects for one more big win before year-end.

Workplace InsightSprinting is fine, just don't burn out yourself or your team. Clearly documenting what you've already delivered matters as much as any new win.

  4. Rabbit The Sleepless Worrier

My boss hasn't talked to me lately. Are they unhappy with me?

Stress level ★★★★★ Right now: Replaying every correction from this year at 2 a.m., getting more anxious by the minute.

Workplace InsightInstead of guessing, book 15 minutes with your boss and ask: "Is there anything you'd like me to work on more this year?" The answer is usually better than you fear.

  5. Dragon The Confident One

My performance this year? Nothing to worry about.

Stress level ★☆☆☆☆ Right now: Already planning which role to go after next year.

Workplace InsightConfidence is great, but your standards may not match your boss's. Before your review, check once: what are the three things your boss values most?

  6. Snake The Calm Observer

Let's see the department budget and which way the wind blows.

Stress level ★★☆☆☆ Right now: Quietly noting who keeps getting called in and which projects are getting more funding.

Workplace InsightYour read on things is sharp, but your boss can't read minds. If you want a promotion or a raise, let them know before the review.

  7. Horse The Mentally Checked-Out

After the review it's holiday time. I'll push again next year.

Stress level ★☆☆☆☆ Right now: Physically at the office, mentally planning a vacation or the next opportunity.

Workplace InsightManagers remember the last quarter most (HR calls it the "recency effect"). Don't ease off before year-end; these three months get magnified.

  8. Goat The Negotiation Avoider

Review meetings are so awkward. How do I even bring up a raise?

Stress level ★★★★☆ Right now: Already dreading those 30 minutes face to face with the boss.

Workplace InsightWrite down three sentences first: this year's results, next year's goals, and the support you'd like. Follow your script and you won't freeze.

  9. Monkey The Early Strategist

Year-end. Time to make sure my boss sees me.

Stress level ★★★☆☆ Right now: Speaking up more in meetings and volunteering for the projects the boss cares about.

Workplace InsightVisibility is smart, but it needs real results behind it. Managers can tell who's been doing the work all year and who only shows up in December.

  10. Rooster The Self-Critic

That typo in my March report? My boss definitely remembers.

Stress level ★★★★☆ Right now: Digging up every small slip from this year and docking points from yourself.

Workplace InsightYour boss remembers your whole year, not one typo on one day. Put your energy into organizing your results, not replaying your mistakes.

  11. Dog The Fairness Keeper

Will the top ratings go to the boss's favorites again?

Stress level ★★★☆☆ Right now: Less worried about your own performance than whether the scoring is fair.

Workplace InsightLet facts protect you: record your contributions, dates, and results. If the criteria aren't clear, ask your boss or HR how ratings are decided.

  12. Pig The Easygoing One

Reviews? Whatever happens, happens. It'll work out.

Stress level ★☆☆☆☆ Right now: In the best mood in the whole office, eating and sleeping just fine.

Workplace InsightA relaxed mindset is a strength, but year-end bonuses don't grow by chance. Spend one hour organizing this year's results and turn "it'll work out" into a good outcome.

Know your work. Know yourself. ♡

Your Q4 Review Prep Checklist

① Start collecting your results now: spend 10 minutes a week noting what you finished, with numbers. ② Talk to your boss before the review: find out what matters most to them, so there are no surprises in the meeting. ③ Know what you want next year: a raise, a promotion, new responsibilities, or learning resources. Decide first, then ask. Whatever your animal, you can prepare for review season. The earlier you start, the lower your stress level.
